Renegade Software

Background

Renegade Software was a successful UK-based games publisher, founded in 1991 by The Bitmap Brothers. Initially, the studio used the label to publish their own games, after they had become dissatisfied with the practices of their previous publisher, Mirrorsoft.

(1991-1997)

Logo: On a black background, we see a stylized skull face with a blue-yellow five-pointed star behind it, and a red ribbon marquee with "Renegade" in script below it.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Uncommon. Seen mainly on Bitmap Brothers games published by the company, although it has appeared on games from other developers.

WarnerActive

Background

WarnerActive was a CD-ROM subsidiary of Time Warner Entertainment founded in 1995.

(September 1995)

Logo: We see two 3D circles swirling a gray one with a golden one inside it. The letters "W" and "A" fall from the top and bottom sides, merge themselves inside the circles and become white. The letter "A" misses the horizontal bar. The golden circle then becomes an arc, posed over the letters, and the gray circle remains around and shines. Then, the name "WarnerActive TM" fades in and "Active" turns italics.

Technique: Rather good CGI animation for 1995.

Music/Sounds: An original musical score with metallic entries.

Availability: Seen on Panic in the Park. This game was later released under the Warner Interactive banner.

Warner Interactive

Background

In 1995, Renegade Software was purchased in an acquisition by Time Warner Entertainment. Both Renegade and WarnerActive were merged into Warner Interactive, although the former brand was still used in titles. The European division of Time Warner Interactive was soon merged into the company after it was sold to Midway Games that year.

When Time Warner decided to get out of the video game business in 1997, Warner Interactive was sold to GT Interactive Software.

1st Logo (1995-November 11, 1996)

Logo: We see the famous "\\'" on a navy blue circle, based on the 1972-1984 theatrical logo. The background is white. The words "WARNER INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT" are written below, each on a separate line.

Variant: On Virocop, the logo shares the screen with the Renegade logo.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Seen on Pitball and Virocop, among others. Many titles were actually released under the Time Warner or Renegade Software name.

2nd Logo (1996-1997)

Logo: The logo is similar to the previous one, but now the background is black and the text reads "WARNER INTERACTIVE" on one line. Also, the custom Warner font is used, like in its movie counterpart.

Technique: None.

Music/Sounds: None.

Availability: Seen on 3 Skulls of the Toltecs and International Moto X.
