PBS Coming Up Next Bumpers

From Audiovisual Identity Database

1st (known) bumper (1995-Fall 1998)

Bumper: A series of slides using the red background from PMcD Design's 1994 PBS rebrand. In order: With "Next" along the dark red plane and the PBS P-Head where the dark red and yellow planes intersect, a wooden frame appears to the right, with a still from the upcoming program within and the name of the program below. Both fade out before the whole thing fades to black. The P-Head remains in the same location, but "Today" is shown to the right. The next three programs appear below "Today", with their respective times appearing below the P-Head and "All times are Eastern Daylight." appearing in a small font at the bottom of the screen. Same as the "Next" slide, but with "Tomorrow" in place of "Next". Fading in to the right are four programs scheduled to be shown by the end of the next 24 hours. As with the "Today" slide, "All times are Eastern Daylight." appears in a small font at the bottom of the screen. This time, only the P-Head appears in its place. "Thanks for tuning in and supporting Public Television!" fades in to the right, then fades out to make room for a message encouraging viewers to visit PBS Online: "For more information on the programs you see here, be sure to visit the PBS homepage on the Internet at http://www.pbs.org."

Technique: CGI.

Music/Sounds: TBA, with Chris Murney announcing the next program and what to expect the next day around the time of the program that was just shown and a female announcer encouraging viewers to support their PBS station.

Availability: Extinct.

2nd (known) bumper (Fall 1998-Summer 2000)

Bumper: On a computer-generated green sky background, an Asian woman in a red shirt hands a placard with "Next" against the same green sky background to a black man in a red shirt as the camera pans to the right on the chromakey set to reveal an old white man in a red shirt holding a placard with the same green sky background. After a lower-third graphic with "Next", and the PBS circle P-Head to its right, against the same green sky background appears in the lower-right-hand corner of the screen, and the circle P-Head briefly appears behind the two men, the black man's placard fades to a series of clips from the upcoming program, while the name of the upcoming program, in all-caps, fades in on the old white man's placard. The two men watch the footage on the black man's placard in amazement and delight.

Technique: Same as the 1998 PBS logo, plus some obvious chromakey (though not to the point of any artifacts appearing).

Music/Sounds: A piano/electric guitar rendition of the 1998 PBS logo's music, in the key of E.

Availability: Extinct. Was seen on a WXEL recording from June 1999.

3rd (known) bumper (July 2000-2002)

Bumper: On a gray/blue/orange and light blue/green background, the PBS circle zooms in in the center portion. The lower bar has the PBS circle in black and white to the right. As the PBS circle in the center portion fades, circles start appearing, overlapping each other. To the left, "COMING UP" appears in white, followed by the program name in black to its right.

Technique: CGI.

Music/Sounds: An extended version of the 2000 PBS ID's celesta/acoustic guitar music. Sometimes, a voiceover describing the program can be heard.

Availability: Extinct. It can be found between PBS programs on Internet Archive's 9/11 archive, both after one program ends and before the next program begins.
