Background

Lion Television is a British production company that was founded in 1997 by Nick Catliff, Richard Bradley and Jeremy Mills to handle operations in London, Glasgow and New York to handle service for the U.S. and U.K.

1st Logo (1997-2004)

Logo: On a black background, we see dust that forms a white box with the black word "Lion" in it. The logo then shines with a dust effect and flashes, then the box and "Lion" turn white, and the box turns blue with the word "t e l e v i s i o n" in it, along with a line below the logo.

Variants:

  • On shows produced by its Scotland subsidiary, the word "S c o t l a n d" is shown below the line.
  • The logo often shares the screen with other logos.
  • The logo sometimes can be seen in-credit.

Technique: Live-action effects.

Music/Sounds: A heavenly choir theme with xylophone or the end theme of the show.

Availability: Seen on Lion Television shows from the era, such as Hotel, Backstage, Paddington Green, documentary series and the U.S. version of Playing It Straight.

2nd Logo (2004-2021)

Logo: On a black background, we see the white word "Lion" flash in with a shine effect, then a bordered square draws in, a filled white square fades in, and the blue rectangle zooms out. As it continues zooming out, a blue line draws in, and the All3Media logo animates below. The word "television" fades in between the word "Lion" and the blue line, and the white outlined square disappears.

Bylines: Starting in 2008, the All3Media byline was added.

  • 2008-2013: "anAll3MEDIAcompany"; the red dot appears from the left of the white box and the words "an" and "company" appear on the left and right sides of the All3Media logo, which fades in underneath.
  • 2013-2021: "anall3mediacompany", with the 2013-2021 All3Media logo animating as normal.

Variants:

  • Until 2008, the pre-2013 All3Media logo was seen underneath the blue bar.
  • On shows produced by its Scotland subsidiary, the white word "Scotland" is shown on the blue line.
  • On History Detectives, the logo is shortened.
  • On most shows, text appears underneath reading either "A Lion Television/All3Media Production" or "A Lion Television Production".
  • Sometimes, this logo shares the screen with other logos.
  • Sometimes, the logo is still.
  • Sometimes, the logo is in-credit.
  • Sometimes, the word "Lion" is bolder, and the All3Media International logo can be seen below.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Music/Sounds: The ending theme of the show or none.

Availability:

  • It was seen on then-new seasons of current shows from Lion Television, which are Homes Under the Hammer and History Detectives.
  • It was also seen on its then-new shows and documentaries produced by Lion Television from 2004 until 2021, such as the original UK and US versions of Cash Cab, as well as the original and the revival versions of Horrible Histories, Play Your Pets Right, Secrets of the Saqqara Tomb, Horrible Histories: Gory Games, The Battle for Britain and the Kids for Counting series, among others.

3rd Logo (2021-)

Logo: On a blue spotlight background, we see the word "lionTV" shining. As the background dims to dark blue, the 2021-present All3Media logo fades in, along with the byline "An All3Media Company" on the right, below the logo.

Variants:

  • Sometimes, the background is black, and the text zooms out.
  • On shows produced by its Scotland subsidiary, the word "SCOTLAND" wipes in.
  • On American shows starting in 2021, the word "USA" appears underneath.
  • Sometimes, it shares the screen with other logos.
  • A still version of this logo exists.

Technique: 3D computer animation.

Music/Sounds: The ending theme of the show or none.
