Kyoto Animation (Japan)

From Audio Visual Identity Database

Kyoto Animation (often abridged to KyoAni by fans) is a Japanese animation studio located in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, known since 2003 for producing numerous popular anime series including The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, K-On!, Clannad, Nichijou, Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, and A Silent Voice, among others. KyoAni is unique compared to most animation studios in that their animators are salaried employees instead of freelance workers, allowing them to focus more on the quality of their frames rather than meeting frame production quotes. On July 18, 2019, Studio 1 of the company sadly fell victim to an arson attack, which claimed the lives of 36 people, and injured 34. Thankfully, they have since recovered from these attacks and have produced content since then.

Kyoto Animation logo.jpg

Nicknames: "The Kyoto Eye", "Harmony of Water"

Logo: On a black background, a small white circle grows in the bottom left corner of the screen, followed by a smaller black circle in it. 6 teardrop-like shapes appear around the sphere, forming a eye and therefore, the Kyoto Animation logo. Beside it, the text "Kyoto Animation" appears in a bold sans font, while their URL is seen below in a smaller print, and both are in white. The former condenses, while the latter spreads apart. Behind it while the logo forms, a large eclipse formed and reveals a blue body of waving water with a dark blue cloudy sky above it. The eclipse then forms a Earth-like planet and multiple lights flying in front of it. As it continues to recede back, the logo fades out and large rays of light emerge from the top right of the screen. The entire thing then fades to a white background with "Kyoto Animation" in a red version of their corporate font in the middle, casting a shadow on the background.

Variant: Later on, an enhanced version was made. The logo text is in a different font, the globe comes out earlier and is a lot more realistic, the lights are now cyan and come out much earlier, the waves and sky are more realistic as well, with the sky being clear, and the light rays are gone. The end result is also changed with even spacing and no more shadow effect. The entire thing is now widescreen as well.

FX/SFX: The eye logo forming, the text changing, the globe revealing itself, the lights flying, the rays shining, the end result fading in.

Music/Sounds: A majestic orchestral fanfare, in which there are 2 different versions. The logo may also be silent as well.

Availability: Rare, as it's not seen on their TV productions. However, it does appear on some video releases of their anime, and on their movies as well. The enhanced version first appeared on A Silent Voice.

Editor's Note: Its a peaceful logo, and it does have some nice animation for the time that holds up well today.
