Buena Vista Home Entertainment Now on Videocassette/DVD Bumpers
North American Bumpers
1st Bumper (1981-1982)
Bumper: On a blue background we see the words "HERE ARE SELECTED HIGHLIGHTS FROM OTHER WALT DISNEY HOME VIDEOCASSETTES" on the left corner of the screen in yellow text.
Technique: None.
Music/Sounds: None.
Availability: This was typically seen at the end of Disney films released on video at the time, either for sale or rental. In general, it's not that easy to find; it depends on the tape label, the date it was printed in (a print date is usually seen on the spine of the videotape). A few examples are the very first printing of the 1982 VHS of A Walt Disney Christmas, the 1981 VHS of Pollyanna, and the 1981 VHS of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
2nd Bumper (1981-1982)
Bumper: On a black background we see the Walt Disney Home Video logo (with Sorcerer Mickey) with the words "Also available from" above; everything is colored in tealish grey and outlined in white. If you look closely, you can see the copyright date below the logo.
Technique: None.
Music/Sounds: None.
Availability: Same as the 1st bumper.
3rd Bumper (Spanish) (1990's)
Bumper: Same as the Feature Presentation bumper, but the text reads "Ahora en Video" ("Now on Video" in the Spanish language) or "Maintenant disponible sur vidéocassette" ("Now available on videocassette" in the French language).
Technique: Same as the Feature Presentation bumper at the time.
Music/Sounds: Same as the Feature Presentation bumper at the time.
Availability: Can be found on US Spanish and Canadian French Disney-associated videocassettes of the era.
4th Bumper (1990-1991)
Bumper: Same as the 1990 "Coming to Theaters" bumper of the time, except the text reads "Now On Videocassette".
Variant: On the 1991 print of Shipwrecked, only the sparkling/shining animation is shown and Brian Cummings says, "Now on videocassette."
Technique: The words flying up and down, sparkling and shining.
Music/Sounds: The 1989 Feature Presentation jingle, while Grant Goodeve announces "Don't miss this timeless Disney classic now on videocassette."
Availability: Seen on the Walt Disney Classics 1990 print of Peter Pan, before a video spot for The Little Mermaid. It was also seen on the 1991 VHS of Shipwrecked.
5th Bumper (1992-1994)
Bumper: On a black background we see the words "Now Available on Videocassette" in blue.
Variants:
- There is a rare version where Brian Cummings either says "Look for this ownable hit, from Touchstone Home Video". This version used the narrow version of the font. It is shown above to the right. The text says "Look For This HIT MOVIE".
- Another version is on some tapes, such as the 1994 VHS of The Incredible Journey, which had "Own Your Favorite HIT MOVIES", with the announcer saying "Now you can own your favorite hit movies!".
- An even rarer version that was found on some tapes such as Noises Off! and the 1992 VHS of Paradise, has the text "HIT MOVIES You Can Own" zooming in. The announcer says "Look for these hit movies you can own!"
- An alternate "Now Available on Videocassette" has Cummings saying "Now on Videocassette".
- On the 1993 VHS of A Stranger Among Us, the text reads "Look for these ACTION HITS" with the announcer saying "Look for these action hits from Hollywood Pictures Home Video!"
- On the 1992 VHS of A Woman Under the Influence, Brian Cummings says "Ask your video dealer about these hit titles from Touchstone Home Video." while the Jim Henson video jingle plays.
- On releases from the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and Pakistan, the bumper is still and silent. It also extends for more than ten seconds.
Technique: None.
Music/Sounds: Same as the 4th bumper (heard in the '90s VHS print of the 1987 original film version, starring Shue).
Availability: It can be seen on many other films made by Touchstone, Hollywood and Disney. It was also seen on different prints of the Masterpiece Collection videos from the 3rd bumper.
6th Bumper (1994)
Bumper: Same as the FP bumper of the time but the text reads "Now on Videocassette" and there is no animation.
Technique: None.
Music/Sounds: The music for the 1991 WDHV logo plays and Brian Cummings says "Now on videocassette." (The voiceover is actually the same one as his variant of the previous bumper).
Availability: Can be seen on 1994 Masterpiece Collection prints from Mary Poppins to So Dear to My Heart.
7th Bumper (1994)
Bumper: On a black background, we see the blue-gradient words "NOW AVAILABLE TO OWN ON VIDEOCASSETTE".
Technique: None.
Music/Sounds: The first eight notes of "Great Ovation", with Brian Cummings saying "Now available to own on videocassette"
Availability: Rare. It's likely considered a predecessor to the 7th Bumper. Seen on the 1994 releases of the Family Film Collection that include Old Yeller, The Parent Trap (the original), and That Darn Cat!.
8th Bumper (1994-2001)
Bumper: "NOW AVAILABLE TO OWN ON VIDEOCASSETTE" or "NOW AVAILABLE ON VIDEOCASSETTE" replaces the usual text on the FP bumper of the time.
Variants:
- Around 1998, three new variants were introduced: "NOW AVAILABLE ON VIDEO AND DVD", "NOW AVAILABLE TO OWN ON DVD" or "NOW AVAILABLE TO OWN ON VIDEO AND DVD". All three featured the text merely zooming in.
- On the 1996 VHS of A Kid in King Arthur's Court, the finished "NOW AVAILABLE TO OWN ON VIDEOCASSETTE" bumper fades in, then fades to the 1991 WDHV logo. This was seen before a preview of Gordy.
Technique: The zoom in, and the white flash.
Music/Sounds: The 1994 FP music with Brian Cummings reading the text for the bumpers above. The zoom-in variants use the 1989 Feature Presentation music.
Availability: Common; seen on most Disney/Touchstone/Miramax/Hollywood/Dimension VHS prints released in the mid to late 90s and can be even seen on a few early 2000's releases (mainly Dimension releases).
9th Bumper (December 1999-2006)
Bumper: Same as the 1999 Coming Soon to Theaters bumper, but "Now Available" zooms down and the words "TO OWN ON VIDEO & DVD" zoom in from the right.
Variants:
- Another variant is exactly the same as the first, but with "AND DVD" in "TO OWN ON VIDEO AND DVD" omitted so the logo just says "Now Available TO OWN ON VIDEO", while the announcer says that.
- On some DVDs, "TO OWN" is not seen, so the text says "Now Available ON VIDEO AND DVD" or "Now Available ON VIDEO", while the announcer says that.
- In mid-December 2003, the text was changed to read "Now Available TO OWN ON DVD AND VIDEO".
- Spanish tapes have the text "Ahora EN VIDEO" ("Ahora EN DVD Y VIDEO" in later releases), while Canadian French ones have "Maintenant Disponible SUR VIDEOCASSETTE" ("Now Available ON VIDEOCASSETTE").
- On PSP releases, the text reads "Now Available for PSP" and has no announcer.
- One variant has the "Now Available COLLECTOR'S EDITION DVD" text with the announcer saying "Now available to collector's edition DVD."
Technique: The animation.
Music/Sounds: The gentle synth music used on most bumpers during this era, while an announcer says "Now available to own on video and DVD."
Availability: Common. Seen on most VHS tapes from 2000-2005, and DVDs from 2000-2006, many of which are still in print. The first variant is seen on the 1999 VHS of Annie as well as the 2002 VHS of Lilo and Stitch and at the end of the VHS of The Tigger Movie.
9th Bumper (October 2001)
Bumper: On an orange background, a silver jack-o-lantern is seen in the middle of the screen, with a surprised expression and some detailing of lines. The jack-o-lantern then spins wildly, transforming into the text "NOW AVAILABLE TO OWN ON VIDEO", in the same font as with all of these bumpers. The jack-o-lantern returns to the screen by falling from the top and pushing the words back down.
Technique: The jack-o-lantern spinning and falling.
Music/Sounds: A spooky, childish tune, with the announcer saying the message on the screen.
Availability: Seen on the Halloween 2001 VHS collection.
10th Bumper (2001-2002)
Bumper: On a green background, the words "Now Available to Own on Video" in an icterine color slide in one row at a time while handprints appear all over the screen. As the bumper finishes, two black "bars" from the top and bottom of the screen close in on each other, cutting to a black screen.
Technique: The handprints, the words sliding in, and the black "bars" closing in to a black screen.
Music/Sounds: A whimsical woodwind jingle ("Spooks Come Out to Play" by Adele Patricia Frodsham; the same tune used for all of the "handprint" bumpers), with Brian Cummings saying "Now available to own on video."
Availability: Ultra rare, and the toughest find of the "handprint" IDs. It appeared on The Book of Pooh: Fun With Words and The Book of Pooh: Fun With Friends, which was only used for Disney's "Halloween Haunt" video promotion. Most future releases have the next bumper, since the DVD business was picking up steam quickly. However, Rolie Polie Olie: The Great Defender of Fun has this.
11th Bumper (2001-2005)
Bumper: On an indigo background, the words "Now Available To Own On Video & DVD" in a mint green color appear. It's a different concept, though. "Now Available" and "Video & DVD" appear to tilt until they appear horizontal at the middle of the screen, while "To Own On" zooms in. As the bumper finishes, a circle cuts to a black background (like the Join Us After The Program variant).
Technique: The handprints, the words "tilting" and zooming in, and the circle cutting to a black screen.
Music/Sounds: Same as above, only Brian Cummings now says "Now Available to Own On Video & DVD."
Availability: Very rare, but much more common than the previous bumper since the DVD business was reaching its prime. Seen on later preschool-oriented releases from Disney, though it doesn't appear as much on Winnie The Pooh tapes. Your best bets are Rolie Polie Olie: Telling The Truth, Rolie Polie Olie: A Jingle Jangle Holiday, and Disney Sing Along Songs: The Twelve Days of Christmas (which was also one of the last tapes to use the 1986 WDHV logo).
