Buena Vista Home Entertainment Coming on Videocassette/DVD Bumpers
North American Bumpers
1st Bumper (1985-1986)
Bumper: On a black background, we see "COMING SOON" in a white font (Arial Narrow).
Variants:
- In some tapes, the text says "Coming Soon From WALT DISNEY HOME VIDEO" and is in a Helvetica and on a black-blue gradient background.
- Another variant replaces the text with "COMING SOON FROM", with the Touchstone Home Video logo below. Everything is in turquoise.
- On the VHS of My Science Project, the text is dark blue.
Technique: None.
Music/Sounds: None.
Availability: Rare. The original "COMING SOON" version is seen on the original video releases of Return to Oz and The Small One. The "Coming Soon From WALT DISNEY HOME VIDEO" clip-on is only known to appear on One Little Indian, among other releases of the time. The "Now on Walt Disney Home Video..." clip-on can be spotted on reissues of Disney films from 1986 such as Return to Witch Mountain. The "COMING SOON FROM TOUCHSTONE HOME VIDEO" bumper can be seen on the VHS of Wildside: Buffalo Who?.
2nd Bumper (1990-1992)
Bumper: Same as the 1990 "Coming to Theaters" bumper of the time, except the text reads "Coming On Videocassette".
Technique: The words flying and zooming in, followed by the sparking and shining.
Music/Sounds: The 1989 FP jingle with Grant Goodeve saying "Coming on videocassette."
Music/Sounds Variants:
- On the 1992 release of So Dear to My Heart, it had the 1989 FP jingle but shortened with Mark Elliot saying "Coming Soon From Walt Disney Home Video."
- Sometimes, Brian Cummings will say "Coming Soon on Videocassette". A similar variant has Grant Goodeve saying the same thing.
- On the demo copy of The Rocketeer, Billy Bathgate and the original copies of The Doctor and Paradise, the announcer says "Coming From Touchstone Home Video."
- On the 1991 release of White Fang the announcer says "Coming from Walt Disney Home Video."
- On the Buena Vista Home Video release of A Day of My Hometown, a deeper-voiced announcer says "Don't miss these exciting upcoming releases that you'll find at your favorite video rental store." The music is also lower-pitched.
Availability: Very rare. Can be found on Mr. Destiny, So Dear to My Heart, The Rocketeer, Billy Bathgate, original copies of The Doctor and Paradise, White Fang, and A Day of My Hometown. It also appeared on Regal Home Video releases in the Phillipines, such as Aswang.
Legacy: Same as the "Coming to Theaters" bumper of the time.
3rd Bumper (Spanish/French) (1990s)
Bumper: Same as the Feature Presentation bumper, but the text reads "Próximamente en Video" ("Coming to Video" in Spanish) or "Bientôt disponible sur vidéocassette" ("Soon available on videocassette" in French).
Variants:
- On the Canadian French release of Aladdin, the text is in Cooper Black font with the 1986 Walt Disney Home Video logo underneath it which looks slightly similar to the "Now You Can Own These Hit Titles" bumper from 1992. An unknown announcer is heard saying "Bientôt disponible sur vidéocassette de Walt Disney Home Video." while the first eight notes of Great Ovation play.
- So far, on the Canadian French release of Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (Pocahontas 2: À la découverte d'un monde nouveau), the same announcer and jingle are both heard, but this time, the text is in a different font.
Technique: Same as the Feature Presentation bumper at the time.
Music/Sounds: Same as the Feature Presentation bumper at the time.
Availability: Can be found on US Spanish and Canadian French Disney-associated videocassettes of the era.
Legacy: Same as the Feature Presentation bumper at the time.
4th Bumper (1992-1995)
Bumper: On a black background we see the royal blue text "Coming to Videocassette".
Technique: None.
Music/Sounds: The 1989 FP music with Brian Cummings or Grant Goodeve saying "Coming soon on videocassette." Both of these voiceovers were once used in the first logo.
Music/Sounds Variants:
- On the first printing of the 1992 VHS of Father of the Bride the 1989 FP jingle is low pitched and slower. In addition the announcer instead says "Don't miss these exciting upcoming releases that you'll find at your favorite video rental store."
- A rare version has been spotted only on the early 1993 VHS of The Mighty Ducks. This version uses a narrow version of the font, with "Coming to Video THIS FALL", being read by Grant Goodeve, and it has the 1991 WDHV music.
- A similar variant of the version above, and similar to the rare Touchstone version of this logo's equivalent "Now on Videocassette" bumper has the text "Own this BIG HIT", while Brian Cummings says "Don't miss owning this big hit, from Touchstone Home Video", with the Jim Henson Video version of the 1991 WDHV Music (this could be a variant of this logo and not the respective "Now on Video" logo, because he says it in a future tense).
- Sometimes, the audio from the previous logo (Brian Cummings saying "Coming Soon to Videocassette" with the 1989/1991 FP Music) is used. This was on The Three Musketeers & the 1994 VHS of The Mighty Ducks.
Availability: Uncommon. Seen on 1992-1995 tapes from Disney, Touchstone, and Hollywood. It was used in tandem with the next bumper starting in 1994.
Legacy: Same as the FP bumper at the time.
5th Bumper (1994-2003)
Bumper: Same as the FP bumper of the time, only "COMING SOON TO OWN ON VIDEOCASSETTE" replaces the regular FP text.
Variants:
- "TO OWN" may be removed from the bumper.
- Starting in 1998, there were new variants introduced that have the text "COMING SOON ON VIDEO AND DVD", "COMING SOON TO RENT ON VIDEO", "COMING SOON TO OWN ON VIDEO AND DVD", or "COMING SOON TO OWN ON DVD" zooming in. The music is replaced by the 1989 FP theme ("Great Ovation"). Sometimes, it will be on a blue background.
Technique: Same as the FP bumper of the time.
Music/Sounds: Same as the 1994 FP bumper, with Brian Cummings saying "Coming soon to own on videocassette".
Availability: Pretty common. Seen on 1994-2000 tapes such as most Disney Masterpiece Collection titles. These bumpers remained on most Dimension releases until 2003.
Legacy: Same as the FP bumper of the time. However, the 1999 bumper is a major improvement over this bumper.
6th Bumper (1995)
Bumper: Same as the 1991 "Feature Presentation" bumper, but "Coming to Videocassette" replaces the FP text. The text also lacks animation.
Variant: Select prints say "Coming Soon to Videocassette" with the announcer saying "And now, coming soon to videocassette." The background also has a more purple tint and a horizontal gradient effect.
Technique: None.
Music/Sounds: Same as the 1989 FP music. The announcer is Brian Cummings, who says "Coming soon to videocassette."
Availability: Very rare. Can only be seen on the original VHS release of The Lion King (1994 version), though it's fairly easy to find in video stores; however, we won't know what variant we'll get unless we can watch the opening previews.
7th Bumper (September 1996-February 1, 2000)
Bumper: We see a TV in a living room, showing the scene from Fantasia with Mickey Mouse putting the sorcerer's hat on, and then it cuts to a family watching the TV happily, and cuts one more time to the TV, with the 1991 WDHV logo on the screen. The screen comes closer to us, showing the stare of the trailer.
Variants:
- On the 2000 VHS's of Tarzan and Toy Story, the logo plays as usual, then the Gold Walt Disney Home video logo fades in to the Disney DVD logo, which shines and zooms out of the TV screen. The announcer says "Enjoy all the magic at home with these great Disney movies coming to video and Disney DVD!".
Technique: The family watching TV.
Music/Sounds: Either a dreamy string/woodwind tune, or the end of the Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection logo music (only if it's connected to the Walt Disney Company Intro) with Beau Weaver saying, "Enjoy all the magic at home with these great Disney movies coming to video!"
Music/Sounds Variants:
- On the 1996 VHS's of The Aristocats and Oliver and Company, the announcer says "And look for these great Disney movies to add to your home video collection!"
- Also on the 1996 VHS of The Aristocats, the music is the beginning of the Oliver and Company song, "Why Should I Worry?". The announcer is still heard. This was most likely due to a video processing error, as Oliver and Company was not being advertised.
- On the 1997 VHS of 101 Dalmatians (the live action version), the announcer says "Enjoy all the magic at home with this great Disney movie coming to video!"
- On some 1999 & 2000 tapes with the WDC Intro like Toy Story, Tarzan, The Great Mouse Detective, and A Bug's Life, the 1992 distorted version of the 1988 Walt Disney Classics music plays.
Availability: Uncommon. Seen on 1996 to 2000 Disney movie videos at the time, beginning with The Aristocats. It last appeared on the 2000 VHS of Tarzan. It can only be found on tapes with the Walt Disney Company intro, though on the 1999 VHS of Pinocchio, it is absent and is replaced with a version of the 9th logo based off Pinocchio.
Legacy: The version with the Classics music may bother a few, since it uses the distorted recording of the music, even if they expected the clean version. Most may not notice, however.
8th Bumper (October 27, 1998)
Bumper: A bright, lens-flare-styled flash occurs. After the flash disappears, we see a screen that has a yellow box in the upper-left corner, a box of blue television static that has an oddly designed, "retro" styled television set with a transparent screen in the upper right corner, and a cerulean box at the bottom half of the screen. We see cerulean text that reads "coming soon" fading in on the yellow box, followed by the Walt Disney Home Video logo (with the "HOME VIDEO" text packed closely together underneath the Walt Disney text) logo fading in on the cerulean box. At the same time, the television screen on the television set has the Gold 1991 Walt Disney Home Video logo fade in.
Technique: The moving blue television static background, the television screen, and the text for both boxes.
Music/Sounds: A "whoosh" sound for when the flash occurs, accompanied by new-age guitar/synth chords. We hear an announcer (Brian Cummings) say: "And coming soon, from Walt Disney Home Video..."
Availability: Extremely rare. Seen only on the 1998 VHS of The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride.
Legacy: Some may be surprised by the fast-paced nature of the bumper.
9th Bumper (October 26, 1999-December 5, 2006, February 2007?)
Bumper: Same as the 1999 filmreel "Coming Soon To Theaters" bumper, but "TO OWN ON VIDEO & DVD" appears in the gold bar instead. The text in the gold bar has been made smaller and adjusted into two rows to accommodate the entire phrase, with "TO OWN ON" at the top and "VIDEO & DVD" at the bottom.
Variants:
- Canadian French tapes have the text "Bientôt Disponible SUR VIDEOCASSETTE" ("Coming soon ON VIDEOCASSETTE").
- Starting on November 18, 2003 with the VHS of The Santa Clause 2 (the DVD used the original variant), the logo instead says "Coming Soon TO OWN ON DVD & VIDEO", reflecting DVD overtaking VHS in sales that year.
- On the 2004 VHS of Toon Pals: Mickey, the text zooms out to the background where Donald, Mickey, and Goofy are posing. The 2003 announcer was used for this variant.
- One variant has the "Coming Soon on Video & DVD" text with the drop shadow.
- One variant has the "Coming Soon to COLLECTOR'S EDITION DVD" text with the announcer saying "Coming soon to collector's edition DVD."
- Another variant has the text read as "SNEAK PEAK" with the announcer saying "Here's a sneak peak of an all-new Lion King motion picture event!" This was only used on releases from 2003-04 promoting The Lion King 1½ such as The Lion King Special Edition, Finding Nemo, and Pokémon Heroes.
- On the 2006 widescreen DVD of Cars, the bumper is shown in a modified form, looking more like the 13th bumper. The standard bumper is used on the fullscreen version, while the re-releases from 2011 and 2013 have the 13th bumper and the VHS has no previews at all.
Technique: Same as the "Coming Soon to Theaters" bumper of the time.
Music/Sounds: Same as the "Coming Soon to Theaters" bumper music, but with Brian Cummings saying "Coming soon to own on video and DVD." When the bumper was modified in 2003, the voice-over changed with it. However, the DVD release of Freaky Friday uses the updated bumper with the original voiceover.
Music/Sound Variant: A silent variant of the "Coming soon to Own on DVD" variant exists. So far, its only known appearance was the trailer for Alias: The Complete Fourth Season, which can be seen on the previews on disc 1 of Desperate Housewives: The Complete First Season.
Availability: Very common.
- Appears on VHS tapes from October 1999-February 2006 (later tapes from February 2006-February 2007 do not have previews) and DVDs from January 2000-December 2006 such as Toy Story 2, The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, all of the 2001-05 Platinum Edition VHS and DVD releases, Monsters, Inc., Lilo & Stitch, Finding Nemo, Brother Bear, Home on the Range, and The Incredibles, among other releases.
- The last releases with these bumpers were the 2006 DVDs of Cars and High School Musical: Remix Edition and the 2006/2007 demo VHS of Cinderella III: A Twist in Time.
Legacy: Same as the "Coming Soon to Theaters" bumper of the time. However, everything changes in the 13th bumper.
10th Bumper (September 2001-Early December 2001)
Bumper: A picture suddenly bounces down from the top of the screen into view. We see that it features a very dark room with shelves of books, a rocking chair to the right and a Christmas tree in the center of the screen. Then, we see that glitter is lighting up the tree--and by extension, the room--from the bottom to the top, and when it reaches to the star on the tree it shines brightly and outward. The glitter also turns on the multicolored lights on the tree. "Coming This Holiday Season" fades in below the screen but centered on the Christmas tree.
Variant: A different version appeared on Recess Christmas: Miracle on Third Street. This variant started off the same as the regular version, bouncing down from the top of the screen, but this time it features a zoom-out from a giant cartoon television bordered with fancy pillars and a Christmas decoration featuring a yellow streamer and a red bow that turns into a yellow Mickey head. The TV screen flashes the words "HAPPY HOLIDAYS" and then "COMING SOON".
Technique: The bumper bouncing into view, the Christmas tree lighting up, "Coming This Holiday Season" appearing.
Music/Sounds: A whimsical rendition of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", with Brian Cummings saying "There's special holiday fun and excitement coming your way on Disney DVD and video!".
Availability: Despite its short lifespan, it's fairly common. Seen on Recess: School's Out, Recess Christmas: Miracle on Third Street and many Rolie Polie Olie and The Book of Pooh tapes.
11th Bumper (October 2001)
Bumper: On an orange background, a silver witch flies across the screen, dragging in the words "COMING SOON TO OWN ON VIDEO AND DVD", in the same font as all of the bumpers used during the time. The witch then flies back in, pushing the words away.
Technique: The witch flying in and out, the words being dragged in and out.
Music/Sounds: A spooky, childish tune, with the announcer saying the message on the screen.
Availability: Seen on the Halloween 2001 VHS collection.
12th Bumper (October 2001)
Bumper: On an orange background, a silver cat with bushy fur and a frightened expression is being squished at the top of the screen by the words "COMING SOON TO OWN ON VIDEO" in the same font as before, moving up. When they reach their place, the cat jumps and the announcer says the words, only for the cat to appear in the lower left corner seconds later.
Technique: The message moving up, the cat being squished and jumping, as well as sliding in at the end.
Music/Sounds: Same as before.
Availability: Same as before.
Legacy: The cat's expression has been found to be unsettling by a few people.
13th Bumper (November 28, 2006-2014, 2019)
Bumper: On a colorful background, we see the text "Coming to DVD/and Blu-ray Disc" fly up. A disc is seen at the left upper corner. The colors range from blue, red, purple, green, yellow, pink, gold, magenta, gray, teal, and even just straight-up black and white (including the disc).
Technique: The text appearing.
Music/Sounds: Below is a list of known variants, all accompanied by whooshes.
- An instrumental rendition of "When You Wish Upon A Star".
- A whimsical fanfare.
- A rock tune.
- An orchestral fanfare that sounds like something you'd hear in an action movie.
- An eerie synth tune.
- A calm piano tune.
- The 2006 and 2007 "Coming Soon to Theaters" themes.
- Sometimes, only the whooshes are heard.
Availability: No longer current, but still very common.
- Seen on DVDs from late 2006 to 2014 such as Ratatouille, WALL-E, Tinker Bell, Up, Toy Story 3, Cars 2, Bedtime Stories, and the 2011-13 reissues of The Incredibles and Cars, among others. Pre-2010 FastPlay DVDs didn't use this bumper.
- The last release to use this bumper was the 2014 DVD of Frozen. However, the related "Coming Soon to Theaters" clip-on continued to be used until May 2020.
- Surprisingly, this bumper is retained on the 2019 reissues of both Ratatouille and WALL-E, due to being reprints of the original 2007-08 DVDs.
Legacy: The animation of the logo is considered rather cheap compared to the 9th bumper, described by some as looking like it was rendered in Adobe Flash (although the actual video quality is considered fine); though stances have softened on it over the past years since its debut. The synth tune used on some releases, meanwhile, has been found by several people to be rather unnerving and undesirable, especially with the whooshes. It is considered even worse if the black and white variant accompanies it (as seen on the DVD of Ratatouille).
